Classified Spelling
"The object of this book is to encourage a greater accuracy in spelling by approaching the subject in a systematic and logical manner. In Part One the chief rules which govern certain classes of words are fully explained and their validity emphasised by application to numerous examples. Words that are not dependent on any simple rules for their spelling have been classified in Part Two according to their particular letter sequences, for practical experiments have proved that if a child is given a list of words to learn, he will learn the rules more readily and with greater permanency if the words have a common sequence of letters than if the words are in a miscellaneous list or even in a list wherein the words have common associations of ideas but divergent letter sequences. Not only are the words classified according to their spelling, but also they are graded according to their difficulty." (Taken from preface of book). This wee staple-bound booklet may be old fashioned by today's teaching methods, but many professionals believe there is still a place for teaching spelling this way. This book contains excellent material for both school and home use.
